About Kitty & The Ranch
Your Host, Kitty Pallesen
I am the proud founder of Kitty's Wildlife Refuge & Rescue, nestled in the picturesque Sky Valley of Coachella Valley, California. My journey into wildlife conservation was inspired by my mother, a 1947 college graduate who aspired to become a veterinarian but was discouraged due to prevailing gender norms of her time. She became my mentor and ignited my passion for animal care.
For the past 28 years, I have dedicated myself to rescuing and providing sanctuary to the diverse wildlife of this region. Our refuge is home to hundreds of indigenous desert animals, including rabbits, squirrels, roadrunners, coyotes, ravens, hawks, doves, songbirds, and tortoises. We also offer a specialized tortoise sanctuary and an aviary, which are integral to our conservation efforts.
The refuge thrives with constant animal activity set against a serene natural backdrop, making it a perfect place for nature lovers to observe and connect with wildlife. Visitors are welcome to join us in the mornings when the temperatures are cooler. During the midday heat of summer, our animals take a restful break, and we encourage our guests to do the same! Each visit supports our ongoing efforts to protect and nurture these magnificent creatures and their habitats.
"You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you."
Keeper of The Desert Wings
A Poem for Kitty, Guardian of the Wild
By Lynn Drewett, 2025
In the hush of the desert, where silence sings
Stood a woman with fire and feathered wings
Among desert pines, where the winds softly speak
She built a refuge for the strong and the meek
Not of stone, but of soul, her sanctuary grew
Where wild hearts healed and ravens flew
Feathers of black, eyes wise and old
She cradled their pain with a heart of gold
But shadows fell cruel, like poison in spring
When law, without mercy, clipped every wing
They silenced her flock in the name of the state
A heartbreak so sharp it shattered her fate
Yet still she breathed. Though barely, she stood
Grief in her chest, misunderstood
They tried to bind her with chains of blame
But Kitty, the wild one, could not be tamed
From distant hearts, a sacred light flew
A chi ball of love divinely true
It circled the court on that fateful day
And the chains of injustice melted away
No jail could hold her, no verdict define
The woman who walks with creatures divine
She is the wind through the trees, and stars in the sand
A warrior of life with a healing hand
To Kitty, whose courage the ravens still know
Whose tears made the desert's soft pines grow
May the world one day learn what the wild have seen,
That love is the strongest force ever been!
