For over 30 years, Kitty’s Wildlife Refuge & Rescue in Sky Valley has been a sanctuary for injured and displaced animals, a hidden gem in the Coachella Valley dedicated to compassion and education. But one year ago, disaster struck.
When Tropical Storm Hilary tore through the region, the refuge was devastated by massive flooding, leaving owner Kitty Pallesen with the heartbreaking task of rebuilding from the ground up. Since then, she has worked tirelessly—16-hour days, seven days a week—to restore the refuge and continue providing a haven for wildlife.
But she’s not alone in this fight. On November 23, 2024, a wave of kindness swept through Sky Valley as the Kiwanis Club of Palm Springs organized a large-scale cleanup to help bring the refuge back to life. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves, removing debris and making the area safer for both animals and staff.
“Not only am I indescribably grateful, but I want to bring attention to the good works that this organization is contributing to our community,” Pallesen said, overwhelmed by the support.
The cleanup was a powerful reminder that even in the face of disaster, kindness prevails. Kitty’s Wildlife Refuge & Rescue is rising from the floodwaters, stronger than ever—with the help of a community that refuses to let this vital sanctuary fade away.
