In the heart of the Coachella Valley, Kitty Pallesen has transformed a barren landscape into a thriving sanctuary for desert wildlife. For nearly three decades, Kittyโs Wildlife Refuge & Rescue in Sky Valley, near Desert Hot Springs, has been a beacon of hope and healing for countless animals. From squirrels and roadrunners to coyotes and hawks, the refuge provides food, water, shelter, and medical attention to native desert species, as well as a safe haven for those injured by urban sprawl.
Kitty’s dedication began when she moved to the area nearly 30 years ago and planted over 200 trees. Since then, she has watched her refuge blossom into a vibrant ecosystem supporting hundreds of animals. Beyond wildlife care, Kitty also helps local pet owners with low-cost spay and neuter services, believing that everyone who wants to care for an animal should be able to afford it.
However, 2022 brought heartache to Kitty and her beloved refuge. A devastating event saw the loss of her cherished ravens, who were euthanized following a citation from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for lacking the necessary permits to keep them. Despite her efforts to rectify the situation, Kitty faced bureaucratic hurdles that led to this tragic outcome. Her loss underscores the complex challenges faced by wildlife rescuers, balancing regulations with the needs of animals they’ve come to love.
In response to these challenges, Kitty has not lost her spirit or commitment. Her refuge continues to thrive, funded by donations and an innovative Airbnb Experience, where visitors can engage directly with the wildlife. This unique interaction not only supports the refuge financially but also educates people about the importance of conservation.
Kittyโs story is not just about the refuge she built, but about her undying commitment to the creatures that share our world. Itโs a poignant reminder of the impact one person can have on the lives of many. As Kitty says, โNature is precious, and it is our responsibility to take care of it, because if we donโt, it could disappear.โ Join Kitty in her mission to protect and preserve โ a visit to her refuge is a step towards safeguarding our planetโs future.
